I’ve really been enjoying the creative process of conceptual design work lately—including my latest brand design for Makalú Kombucha, a fictional kombucha distributor.
If you browse the kombucha aisle at Trader Joe’s, you’ll notice a common theme in the bottle packaging: most of the kombucha brands play into an eastern spirituality theme (think rainbow-colored chakras and yogi mandalas). I wanted to offer a different take: something that would stand out on the shelves as a high-end alternative.
Makalú Kombucha features a rich earth-toned color palette with iridescent gold accents—setting the tone for a sophisticated brand. The custom tiger illustration is a nod to kombucha’s eastern heritage; the drink was first popularized in China and Tibet.
I also added a painterly illustration of mandarin oranges to represent the brand’s signature citrus flavor. This illustration also adds a pop of color to the brand in a few thoughtfully selected elements.
Multiple logo layouts and distinctive badges lend versatility to the brand; luxe packaging ties the whole concept together.
Browse and enjoy!
