We’ve had the pleasure of working with quite a few interior designers over the years—and it’s a niche that always feels like a perfect match. Our interior design clients often share aesthetic sensibilities and a refined sense of style that align well with our approach to visual design.
For interior designers in particular, collateral pieces feel especially important. Collateral refers to all the printed and digital implementations of their brand… the deliverables that really help bring the entire look to life in a tangible way. Interior design is such a tactile experience: from textile selections to wood finishes and styled décor, it’s all about layering textures to create a distinctive look.
With that in mind, collateral becomes an important piece of any interior designer’s brand. Just like the beautifully layered spaces they create, brand collateral offers an opportunity to showcase texture and color in a tangible way. With these brand elements, it’s all about the feeling we create—an experience.
Brand collateral can include a wide variety of formats, but below are a few of the pieces we recommend specifically for interior designers. Each of these deliverables helps bring an interior designer’s brand to life in a refined tangible format… They support a cohesive brand identity, and they are guaranteed to make a lasting impression on clients.
Essential Collateral Designs for Interior Design Brands:
Business Cards: a classic printed piece that never goes out of style. In a digital age, we feel that a business card makes an even stronger impression. Business cards are an ideal place to elevate an interior designer’s brand with tactile luxury print processes like letterpress, embossing, or gold foil.
We encourage interior designers to think about business cards beyond the standard networking exchange. Business cards can certainly be handed directly to new contacts, but they’re also the perfect size to drop into presentation folders, design samples, or client / vendor gifts.
Notecards / Stationery: one of my personal favorite collateral pieces. A handwritten note will always be a thoughtful touch appreciated by any recipient. Keep notecards stocked for thank you notes to clients and vendors. These can also be useful for quick notes tucked into any presentation materials or mailed packages.
Letterhead:a highly useful and versatile collateral piece for any interior designer. Consider all the documents flowing in and out of an interior design studio; each one is an opportunity for brand reinforcement and cohesion. Letterhead is the all-encompassing foundation to all documents: a logo and contact information should be visible on all invoices, spec sheets, proposals, and general correspondence.
*Tip: letterhead does not always have to printed! In the modern age, use a “digital letterhead” to ensure your online documents include a logo and brand colors.
Presentation Template: a branded presentation template may be the most important collateral piece for an interior design studio. Design presentations are critical for a smooth client experience: the presentation is a key opportunity to impress a client and encourage them to sign off on initial design concepts with minimal revisions. We typically build presentation templates in Canva for easy future editing.
Client Gift: lastly, I always recommend a personalized gift at some point in the client experience. This is a thoughtful way to express gratitude for your clients—and it helps keep your brand at top of mind when it comes to referrals. This is a collateral piece that will last with your client… and it can also be very shareable on social media, increasing your reach among clients’ social networks.
Extras: Collateral Designs to Further Elevate an Interior Design Brand:
The collateral items listed below are not truly essential to an interior design business… but they do help elevate the brand with thoughtful, cohesive design elements to make a memorable impression:
Packaging: take the client gift a step further with branded gift bags, custom-printed tissue paper, branded silk ribbons, or customized mailer packages. We’ve also seen branded washi tape, stickers, stamps, and embossers. Packaging is really a space to get creative and find personal touches that make sense for your interior design brand.
Laptop / Tote Bags: personalize your favorite tote bag with your interior design studio’s logo. Nylon totes can be embroidered with your logo or brand monogram for a stylish touch.
Studio Signage: add a vinyl logo to your studio’s front door or window to tie the brand into your physical location (it can also be practical: make your location easily findable for first-time clients). Some studios even include a laser-cut logo behind their reception desk for a polished first impression.
Apparel: we’ve had several clients request T-shirt designs for on-site setup days. It’s a smart way to stay comfortable for installations while maintaining a cohesive look for the team. We also love the idea of a silk scarf printed with your brand pattern—a subtle way to incorporate your brand into your personal style.
Which collateral pieces is your interior design studio missing? Which ones would you love to have? We’d be honored to help build a cohesive brand that supports your client experience every step of the way.
