March 2, 2020
When I started this business, I set a goal that seemed unfathomable at the time: to survive for one year without losing money. I thought: “Let’s just give it a year. Let’s see what happens.”
So much did happen.
It’s humbling to see how tiny those seedling dreams feel now in comparison to the reality I see before me today: a business that allows me to work with incredible clients on projects that fulfill my creative spirit. A job that allows me to wake up each day feeling inspired and excited. A business that gives me the gift of flexibility, financial freedom, and true joy in my daily work.
It’s not an easy job, but it is a dream job. I can’t believe how fortunate I am to wake up every day, pour a cup of coffee, and step into my office with pencil in-hand to dream up a new creation—a design that will be as transformative for my client as much as it is for my own creative soul.
With each passing year, I am reminded again and again to slow down and appreciate the current season of my business. I wrote this on my one-year anniversary, and it still holds true today:
“But if you had asked me one year ago what I dreamed of… it was this. What I have right here and right now. An opportunity to wholeheartedly love and serve my clients. A calendar full of creatively inspiring projects. A network of encouraging friends in the creative community. A flexible schedule that allows me to nurture my marriage and my home. A balance of joy and profit in my work.”
I expect this year to hold a lot of change—a season of transition, in many ways. And with exciting new opportunities on the horizon, it’s tempting to be overwhelmed by the chaos or to be afraid of the unknown. It is not my nature to adapt to change; I often hold too tightly to my routines and plans, grasping desperately at that which I can control.
But I’ve learned a lot about myself—about the flexibility and resiliency within me. And more than anything else, the ever-guiding hand of a Father whose plans for me are far grander than my own.
It’s my hope to bend gracefully in this season… to carry peace in my heart with unwavering constancy. I look to the garden yet again for inspiration… the flowers bending toward the sunshine in gentle receptivity of warmth and light.
To all of you who have followed along, whether you’re new to the journey or have been here since the start… thank you. My business is thriving because of your support, encouragement, and trust.
And to my number one fan: thank you for loving me and supporting me. Thank you for believing in a dream I never thought possible—for making my heartfelt and humble aspirations into tangible realities. Our marriage has been the greatest gift I could hope to receive in this lifetime. My champagne toast today and always is to you.
And above all else, always, to Him be the glory.
