Brides of North Texas: Cigar Lounge

Today on the blog: another gallery from this season’s Brides of North Texas magazine! As I mentioned before, this season I branched out to show several bold concepts and unique invitation designs. This particular spread is no different: featuring wedding-day signage and a one-of-a-kind invitation suite, it definitely makes an impact in print.

It’s always a treat to work with Shannon of Shannon Rose Events—her creative concepts are guaranteed to inspire. Our past collaborations include an emerald-hued whiskey bar and modern Southern tablescape (both featured on several publications!). Her “Cigar Lounge” concept for this shoot certainly offered plenty of inspiration for my signage and invitation suite designs.

Signage

The Cigar Lounge chalkboard sign features a beautifully flourished calligraphic style—with a relevant quote from Mark Twain as the finishing touch: “I never smoke to excess: that is, I smoke in moderation—only one cigar at at time.”  Topped with simple greenery, it was the perfect touch for this outdoor lounge area. Small signage labels (Mints, Matches, and Cigar Bar) provide elegant details throughout the scene.

Invitation Suite

I also created a special invitation suite, custom-tailored to suit the theme. Emerald and navy envelopes paired with gray tones create a memorable color palette, and each piece of the suite is made to belong in our upscale Cigar Lounge.

A clean layout keeps the focus on uniquely flourished calligraphic elements: the couple’s name and intertwined initials. I chose to write in a monoline calligraphy script (meaning there is no variation between thick and thin lines; the lack of shading helps create a distinct look), to help balance the intricately flourished line-art graphics.

For each custom suite design, I like to come up with one-of-a-kind envelope liner patterns that really help set the suite apart. In this case, I hand-illustrated a cigar and created a custom pattern from the drawing. I used the same process to create an additional liner pattern featuring the tobacco plant flower—a cool finishing touch to a memorable invitation design.

For one final piece, I created a distinctive “love story” card to be displayed at cocktail hour… a fun way to keep guests entertained until the bride and groom arrive!

Take a peek and enjoy! Plus, be sure to look for this spread on the newsstand shelves. You can pick up your own copy at Barnes and Noble!
